The creation of a Coastal Council
In the past two years a broad network of public and private stakeholders in Burgas has worked together towards an Integrated Coastal Management Strategy in the framework of the MyCoast project (www.mycoast.eu). The outcome is a proposal for the formation of a Coastal Council with the objective to improve the quality of tourism and the coastal environment.
An integrated regional development approach
GreenBelt Burgas is the first initiative that will be presented to this Coastal Council as concrete and ambitious step towards an integrated regional development. The GreenBelt approach consists in extending the tourism season and types of tourism by unearthing the unique qualities of rural and nature areas in Burgas, such as the Nature Park Strandzha. Maintenance, revival or strengthening of rural communities, renovation of traditional rural villages, local food and handicraft products sale can be done by developing opportunities offered by the vast amounts of forest, nature and under-utilised agricultural land for innovative types of farming, culinary traditions and eco- and agrotourism, but also by making the present coastal resorts greener and more pleasant.
Connecting to the European GreenBelt
Green areas that are developed and protected in a sustainable way are internationally called "Green Belts". A European GreenBelt initiative has been started to protect the biodiversity of the old "iron curtain". The Strandzha mountains are the first part of this GreenBelt.
